Director of Risk Management & Compliance Officer

About the Position
Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the Director of Risk Management & Compliance is responsible for maintaining Satisfactory or better regulatory ratings through a robust Compliance Management System and Audit Plan that identify, assess, and manage enterprise-wide risks while ensuring compliance with Bank policies, procedures, and applicable federal and state banking laws and regulations.
This position provides leadership for the Bank’s Regulatory, Audit, and Compliance functions—including BSA, Security, and Loss Prevention—and oversees the associated team and third-party support. The ideal candidate brings demonstrated regulatory acumen, sound judgment, and the ability to translate complex compliance requirements into practical, well-supported bank operations. The successful candidate will work closely with executive leadership and the Board, taking a hands-on approach to protecting the Bank, supporting sound business practices, maintaining a strong culture of compliance, and contributing to the ongoing evolution of the Bank’s risk management and compliance programs.
What You’ll Do
As the Director of Risk Management & Compliance Officer, you will:
- Design, implement, and oversee the Bank’s compliance and audit risk assessment programs, including CRA, HMDA, lending, and deposit regulations.
- Coordinate regulatory examinations, compliance monitoring activities, and internal and external audits while ensuring timely resolution of findings.
- Monitor changes in banking laws and regulations and recommend practical enhancements to the Bank’s compliance and risk management programs.
- Manage the Bank’s policy governance framework and present new and revised policies to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Design and administer the Bank’s compliance education and training program.
- Implement and maintain the Bank’s vendor management program, including third-party due diligence, ongoing monitoring, and regulatory compliance oversight.
- Collaborate with compliance consultants, external auditors, regulators, and third-party partners to support examinations, audits, and compliance initiatives.
- Integrate risk management perspectives into strategic and operational decision-making across the organization.
- Conduct exit meetings and prepare compliance and audit reports for Executive
- Management, the Compliance Committee, the Audit Committee, and the Board of Directors.
- Chair the Compliance Committee.
- Serve as the Bank’s Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) Officer and oversee the Bank’s CRA program, regulatory performance, community outreach, and related reporting.
- Support Consumer Lending, Commercial Lending, Deposit Operations, Marketing, BSA, Security, and Loss Prevention in meeting applicable regulatory requirements.
- Develop and maintain the annual Audit Risk Assessment and Audit Plan in coordination with the Bank’s external audit firm.
- Coordinate regulatory responses, corrective action plans, and required regulatory reporting.
- Provide leadership for assigned staff while fostering collaboration, accountability, and professional development.
What You’ll Bring
Education
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Experience
5–7 years of progressive regulatory compliance experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Leadership
Management and leadership experience with cross-functional teams.
Certification
Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM) preferred; ability to obtain certification within 2 years of hire is required.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of federal and state banking laws and regulations.
- Broad understanding of banking risk, including operational, credit, liquidity, transaction, compliance, legal, strategic, and reputational risk.
- In-depth understanding of banking operations, controls, audit techniques, and compliance practices.
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to interpret complex regulations and translate them into practical business guidance.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- High integrity, sound judgment, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships and influence across all levels of the organization.
- Strong time management, multitasking, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and banking-related software.
